1890s Women's Undergarments
The corset and petticoat were created as part of my final major project (level 6) at the Arts University of Bournemouth. They were made to be worn under Janet Arnold's 1893 evening gown and are made to the measurements of the original dress owner with a 20" waist. The corset is from Mandy Barrington's Stays and Corsets and is the 1875 corded and quilted corset. The petticoat is of my own design. I used the skirt pattern from Arnold's 1893 evening gown then added tucks, frills, lace, and ribbons. Both the corset and petticoat were made using modern techniques.

The corset is made from coutil and backed in a stiff muslin, the flossing is a cotton embroidery floss. It was boned using steel and spiral boning as well as cording. Also included in the corset is a steel busk, metal eyelets, quilted gussets, petticoat hooks, and silver aglets at the end of the lacing. The petticoat is made from a lightweight cotton. Decorations on the petticoat include cotton lace, synthetic lace, and silk ribbons. Closure is at the center back with a hook and bar and snaps.
